Family farm — when the milking robot lost the cloud and the heat alert never arrived

A modern family farm with close to 80 dairy cows, a milking robot, activity sensors on the animals and several thousand laying hens in the neighbouring barn. Here is how we built one operations network that handles tractor, cow and office alike.

The situation

A modern family farm in Innlandet. In the loose-housing barn stand close to 80 dairy cows and a milking robot that milks around the clock. Each cow wears an activity sensor around its neck that registers rumination, movement and heat, and the data is sent to the herd-management system and the farmer's phone in real time.

In the neighbouring building, eggs are produced from several thousand laying hens. Climate control, feeding and water systems, egg sorting and camera monitoring are all network-dependent. When something fails there, it shows quickly — both in animal welfare and in the bottom line.

The whole farm ran on a single consumer router in the farmhouse. The signal barely reached across the yard to the barn, and in the henhouse there was nothing. The farmer had patched it with a 4G router on the windowsill of the barn — which regularly dropped off the network in the middle of the night. When that happened, the milking robot lost contact with the cloud, the heat alerts never came through, and the camera in the calving pen showed a black screen on exactly the night he needed it most.

What we found

  • Milking robot, activity sensors, climate control and farmhouse all on the same unsegmented network
  • 4G router in the barn losing connection 1–2 times a week — often in the middle of the night
  • No coverage in the henhouse — feed and climate alarms never reached the phone
  • Calving camera on the same weak Wi-Fi as the family's streaming
  • No failover — a power or fibre outage took down the whole operation at once
  • Herd-management and reporting stalled when many devices were active at the same time
  • No UPS on the network equipment that runs the milking robot

A barn is not an office. When the network goes down, the robot loses contact with the cloud, the sensors stop flagging sick animals, and a missed heat costs real money in lost insemination. This is not an IT problem — it is an animal-welfare and economic problem.

The solution

We trenched fibre between the farmhouse, barn and henhouse — once and for all. On each building we mounted an industrial access point rated for dust, moisture and temperature swings, and we set up outdoor access points with a directional antenna to cover the yard and the silo.

The entire operations network was consolidated into one centrally managed solution, with 4G failover that takes over automatically if the fibre should fail. UPS on all critical equipment keeps the milking robot and sensors running even through shorter power cuts.

Milking robot, activity sensors, feed system and calving camera. Prioritised bandwidth to the herd-management system and vendor cloud platforms.

Climate control, feeding, water and egg sorting. Alarms forwarded directly to the farmer's phone.

Accounting, slaughter settlement, subsidy reporting. Separated from both barn and family.

Streaming, gaming and the children's school laptops — without ever being able to affect production.

Guest / supplier

For the vet, livestock transport driver and service technician. Internet only, no access to operations systems.

Operational reliability

All equipment was gathered in a labelled rack in a dry technical room — not on the windowsill of the barn. Every access point is powered over PoE and monitored around the clock; we get an alert before the farmer does if something is about to fail.

The result

I thought it was just something you had to live with — that the robot now and then lost cloud contact and that the heat app didn't always alert in time. Since we put this in place, it simply hasn't happened. I sleep better, and last month we caught two heats we would definitely have missed with the old setup. That's real calves.
